A-Rod Could Miss Whole Season...Giants Sign Arias 1/26/13

Associated Press
January 26, 2013

NEW YORK - Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it's possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez could miss the entire season while recovering from hip surgery.

The 37-year-old Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip last week. The team said the rehabilitation time was expected to be six months, which would sideline the star slugger until the All-Star break.

But, Cashman says there is no guarantee that Rodriguez will be able to play this year.

In other baseball news:

- Infielder Joaquin Arias (wah-KEEN' AYR'-ee-ahs) has agreed to a $925,000, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants to avoid salary arbitration. The deal reached today leaves reliever Sergio Romo as the only Giants arbitration-eligible player left to sign with the World Series champions.

- The Royals claimed catcher George Kottaras (kuh-TAHR'-uhs) off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and designated infielder Tony Abreu (uh-BRAY'-oo) for assignment. The 29-year-old Kottaras will compete for a backup job behind Salvador Perez in Kansas City.

-- The Seattle Mariners have signed catcher Ronny Paulino to a minor league deal and have invited the 31-year-old to spring training.
