MIDLAND/ODESSA—With energy drinks becoming as popular as soda, local hospitals are finding some new trends that might surprise you.
Emergency room visits tied to energy drinks have doubled nation-wide since 2007.
An ER doctor at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa says it's a trend that rings true right here in the Permian Basin.
“With so many people working overnight shifts, energy drink visits for vomiting, jitters or insomnia are on the rise,” said Sudip Bose, M.d.
But hospital officials at Midland Memorial say they've seen more of an increase of abuse of things like potpourri and k-2 synthetic drugs than energy drinks.
