AUSTIN - Lawmakers are honoring the late state Sen. Mario
Gallegos as the Texas Legislature begins business without the Houston Democrat
for the first time since 1991.
Family members on Tuesday sat at Gallegos' desk on the Senate floor while
colleagues took turns recalling his work as an advocate for education and civil
rights. Gallegos died in October from complications related to liver disease.
Democratic Sen. Leticia Van de Putte said Gallegos never cared about
"ruffling feathers" to do what's right.
Gallegos ran for re-election last year, and his death came too late to
replace him on the ballot. A Jan. 26 special election in Senate District 6 will
decide who fills his seat.
Gallegos got his start in the House, which also passed a resolution honoring
him Tuesday.
