(Midland)- The Midland Rockhounds, Extra Innings, Midland and Odessa College Baseball teams and CBS 7 are all teaming up to help bring the national pastime to servicemen and women overseas.

Tuesday, the team announced a drive to collect baseball gloves and baseballs to be sent to the troops.

You can drop off new or used baseball gloves, and baseballs to the Midland Rockhounds, or to Extra Innings in Midland.

The gloves and balls will be sent to California, and then sent overseas.

Ray Fieldhouse with the Rockhounds talked with CBS 7 about how this all came about: “Spotted the story on a website about this minor leaguer, that he met some soldiers and just asked them point blank what they missed the most while overseas and one of them said we miss being able to just go and have a catch.”

Midland College Coach David Coleman added: “It's really special that we've given our life to the game of baseball. Here's guys who are willing to give their life for us and all they want to do is play baseball.”

Odessa College Coach Brian Blessie also said that he told his guys at practice on Tuesday what they would be doing and that they were excited to help. He urged them to look around and see if they have an extra glove to donate.

The glove drive started Tuesday and will end February 13th, the first day of Spring Training.

If you want to help, you can drop off gloves, or cash donations to the Midland Rockhounds, or Extra Innings.
