Odessa-Odessa’s own eternal flame honoring veterans is set to make a move back to those who made it more than forty years ago. It’s heading back to the Odessa American Legion Post 430—but you might not even know where it’s been all those years.
“It's to commemorate the soldiers who have fought in foreign wars and honor them for their service,” said Ector County Judge Susan Redford.
The flame has a rich history—the American Legion placed it at the County Courthouse in 1969. But it’s been years since the Courthouse used it’s back entrance, and the flame goes unnoticed.
"Where it is now, it's nothing, it's just a stone standing up. The only people that see it now are prisoners,” said Preston Parrott, commander of The American Legion Post 430.
And they're happy to finally bring it home after the City Commission approved their request to take it back.
The monument could be moved within the next three months.
