West Texas Toddler's ID, Cause of Death Pending 1/14/13

CROSBYTON, Texas (AP) - It could be next week before authorities determine what killed a toddler found in a West Texas basement.

Crosbyton Police Chief Greg Parrott said Monday that an autopsy has been performed but investigators are awaiting toxicology results.

No official identification has been made. Authorities believe it's 2-year-old Leah Marie Aguirre.

A child's body was found last week in the basement of Leah's caretaker, Matilda Almaraz. She's charged with capital murder and remains jailed on $1 million bond.

Investigators want to know if other adults lived with Almaraz in her home, about 40 miles east of Lubbock.

Leah's mother gave her to Almaraz. Child protection officials allowed Almaraz to keep Leah after an inspection and background check.

An Amber Alert for the toddler, last seen Jan. 3, went out Jan. 8.
