MARTIN COUNTY - The next phase of making State Highway 349 a four-lane road between Midland and Lamesa is scheduled to begin this month. Workers will begin setting barricades the week of Jan. 14 as workers with DelHur Industries Inc. prepare to start work on a 16.7-mile project that stretches from the Midland County line to Highway 176 in Martin County. DelHur's bid of $15.15 million won the company the contract to widen this stretch of Highway 349.
DelHur plans to start at the north end of the project, just south of Highway 176 in Martin County. The work will be done in three-mile sections constructing half of the roadway at a time. This will leave two lanes open for travel. Speed limits in the construction zone will drop to 60 miles per hour. TxDOT and DelHur have requested extra patrols from law enforcement to help ensure worker and driver safety. The project also will restrict vehicle width to 10 feet to improve safety.
This stage of the project is expected to be completed in late summer 2014. Motorists are asked to obey the lowered speed limits as well as any other warning signs or flaggers in the area. If possible, finding alternate routes will improve safety for motorists as well as workers in the construction zone. Even with a 60 mph speed limit, TxDOT encourages slower speeds when conditions warrant it. Rain, fog, snow, ice and high winds are some of the conditions in which driving slower than the posted speed limit is advisable. DelHur Industries is based in Port Angeles, Wash., but the company's website also lists an office in Andrews, Texas. In business since 1966, the website said the company does a wide array of construction work in 17 western states. This is their first project with TxDOT. In addition to this project, DelHur Industries has also won the contract to widen a 6.5-mile stretch of Highway 349 from the Dawson County line heading south. A start date on that portion has not been determined.
DelHur's two contracts bookend the work already being done on Highway 349 by Jones Brothers Dirt and Paving Contractors Inc. of Odessa. Jones Brothers' bid of $7.6 million won the contract on a 9.5-mile stretch of Highway 349 starting at Highway 176 and going north. That portion of the project began in March 2012 and is expected to be complete this summer.
The Lubbock District of TxDOT also plans to take bids on a project later this year to construct four lanes on the remainder of State Highway 349 from the Dawson County line north to Lamesa. The construction cost estimate for that 13-mile stretch is in the neighborhood of $17 million.
