ODESSA-Third graders at Compass Academy are becoming more fluent in Spanish, and it’s all with an app.

The iPad is enhancing the learning process with a tap and swipe of a hand.

Lainey Holland, a third grade student, said school is a lot easier.

“My homework is easier, and we even have a dictionary on our iPads,” said Holland.

It’s even easier for third grade teacher, Allison Boyd, to engage her students.

“They love them,” said Boyd. “They don’t even know they’re learning because it’s fun.”

And teachers at Compass Academy are discovering their at-risk students are excelling.

Reading has become easier for students.

“Just by having our iPads, students can track the words on the screen with an app that highlights each word,” said Boyd.

Principal Debra Stewart said students that struggled with writing are becoming more confident.

“I know you really see at risk students reluctant to write and there’s been a huge difference in a very short time,” said Stewart.

It’s only been four weeks since these third graders received their iPads, and they are quickly adapting to the new way of learning.

“I feel with books it can be intimidating, but with technology,” said Stewart. “They are very comfortable and they exude an edge of confidence they normally wouldn’t have and it really helps them.”
