Turn Around, Don't Drown 1/9/13

Mike Barker

CBS 7 Closer Look

January 9, 2013

The Texas Department of Transportation is asking West Texans to please drive with caution as recent rains have brought a rash of car and truck crashes. TxDot spokesman Gene Powell says hydroplaning takes place when your tire treads lose contact with the road surface because of the thin layer of water on the road. Powell says motorists need to be aware of this traffic hazard which is quite common on the road today. The best protection is to drive below the speed limit and be prepared for sudden stops. Tires and good wind shield wipers are very important to driver safety. Powell cautions drivers to please be on the look out for depressions in the road which can cause large pools of water to collect or run through the road way. He says the TxDot mantra is:"turn around, don't drown."
