January 8, 2013
ABILENE, Texas (AP) - A West Texas truck driver who says he held up a bank because his rig broke down and he needed cash fast has pleaded guilty to armed robbery.
A federal magistrate in Abilene on Tuesday accepted the plea from 40-year-old Frank Esparza Sr. of El Paso. Esparza also pleaded guilty to using and carrying a firearm during a violent crime in the Sept. 27 holdup of First Bank of Texas in Abilene.
Esparza told law officers that he was driving an 18-wheeler to Lubbock when the truck broke down in Abilene and he needed a quick way to obtain money.
No sentencing date was immediately set for Esparza, who faces up to 25 years in prison. He remains in custody.
