Midland Train Wreck Close Call 1/6/13

MIDLAND – The accident involving a freight train and a vehicle Saturday night sent one man to the Medical Center Hospital, according to Midland Police.
Police was called to a wreck on a train crossing on Carver St. According to the Midland Public Information Officer, Sara Higgins, the driver was headed northbound on Carver St. He drove his vehicle thru the crossings and came to a full stop on the tracks.
Midland Department of Transportation personnel tell us that the vehicle, a Blue GMC Sierra suffered front-end damage and was pushed against the beam that supports the crossing arms.
According to Higgins, the driver, 60-year-old, Benjamin Oakes, suffered minor injuries and was booked for driving while intoxicated.
Midland Police on the scene confirmed that the train was a Union Pacific Railroad train. After the scene was cleared the train continued its eastbound route a little after 7pm.
