New Federal Policy for Immigration Waivers 1/4/13

CBS7 News
January 4, 2013

A federal policy beginning on March 4, 2013 is expected to help some families stay together while going through the immigration process.

There are undocumented immigrants who marry American citizens.

Right now, to get a green card, they have to go back to their home country and apply for a visa there and wait for a decision. As soon as they leave the country, they could be barred from reentering the United States for years.

This new policy will allow immigrants to apply for a provisional waiver before they leave the United States for immigrant visa interviews, showing a separation from their US citizen family member will create a hardship, and come back within a few months.

Details on the process changes are available by clicking here.
