Poll: Obesity's a Crisis But We Want Our Junk Food 1/4/13

Associated Press
January 4, 2013

WASHINGTON - Americans blame too much screen time and cheap fast food for fueling the nation's obesity epidemic, but a poll finds they're split on how the government should help.

A third of people say the government should be deeply involved in finding ways to curb obesity. A similar proportion wants the government to play little or no role, and the rest are in the middle.

Most people support making restaurants post calorie counts on their menus, as well as more physical activity in schools. But they draw the line at policies trying to force healthier choices. Nearly 6 in 10 oppose taxes on unhealthy foods, and three-quarters reject limiting what foods people can buy.

That's according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
