Texas Allows Gun Show Freeway Messages in Houston 1/4/13

HOUSTON - Texas transportation officials have overruled a district
office and restored use of electronic freeway signs for public safety traffic
updates near firearms-related events.

Texas Department of Transportation officials in Houston on Thursday said use
of such signs was suspended amid complaints following a gun show the day after
the Dec. 14 massacre at a Connecticut school. A gunman killed 26 people,
including 20 children, then himself.

TxDOT officials on the state level later Thursday said the local decision to
stop using traffic advisory signs at firearms-related events was wrong. TxDOT
spokeswoman Veronica Beyer says message boards are used to help direct traffic
when there's an accident and at large events for public safety.

Such signs are also typically used for high traffic-volume situations such
as rodeos and sporting events.
