December 30, 2012
HOUSTON (AP) - More than 1,000 people have gathered to remember a Texas police officer fatally shot on Christmas Eve.
Bellaire police Sgt. Jimmie Norman was shot on Dec. 24 by Harlem Harold Lewis who was fleeing police after an attempted traffic stop.
Norman was the first Bellaire police officer to die on duty. The Houston Chronicle reports the 28-year police veteran was remembered Saturday at Houston's First Baptist Church as a charitable family man.
Lewis encountered the 53-year-old police officer outside an auto body shop. The 21-year-old Lewis shot Norman and bystander Terry Taylor, who also died.
Lewis, who was also shot, has been charged with capital murder.
Bellaire police Chief Byron Holloway said he had pain, but no words for the loss.
