Murder Charge Dropped; Man Free After Year in Jail 12/9/12
December 9, 2012
ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) - A 47-year-old man is free after more than a year in jail awaiting trial on a murder charge that prosecutors now have dropped.
Trial was scheduled in another week for Patric Fairs, who was accused of strangling his 33-year-old girlfriend, Philise Lateria Estes, in 2006 at their home in Round Rock, just north of Austin.
Williamson County court documents show prosecutors moved to dismiss the case "in the interest of justice pending further investigation."
Fairs walked out of jail Friday.
One of his lawyers says additional testing is needed on evidence and Fairs harbors no anger toward prosecutors. Prosecutors say results of testing could return the case to grand jurors.
Fairs played basketball for the University of Texas in the 1980s and later played in Australia.
