Canutillo Plans to Fire Ex-El Paso Administrator 12/7/12

Associated Press
December 7, 2012

EL PASO - An ex-official at a West Texas school district where
the state has taken more control amid a testing scandal is being fired after an
audit showed possible cheating attempts at his new job.

Canutillo Independent School District trustees on Thursday night suspended
superintendent Damon Murphy without pay in the dismissal process. An audit
found alleged evidence of tampering with student classifications.

Murphy, who was hired in 2010, declined comment. He's a former associate
superintendent in the El Paso Independent School District.

Ex-EPISD superintendent Lorenzo Garcia must serve more than three years in
prison for fraud. Prosecutors say the conspiracy involved improving test scores
by removing low-performing students from classrooms.

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams earlier Thursday appointed a
board of managers to assume the duties of El Paso ISD trustees.
