MIDLAND- A West Texas man wants to honor the four veterans who were killed at the Hunt for Heroes tragedy last month, but is running into obstacles.

When owner of Petroscribe, Homer Ellinger, said he first heard of the fatal parade accident, he knew he had to do something.

Ellinger placed a small, stone memorial at the site of the crash displaying four rifles and boots to honor the four U.S. soldiers killed.

Now, Ellinger wants to display a five feet tall, 4 feet wide memorial with a prayer to the fallen troops, but railroad officials said he could not place the more than 1,000-pound limestone marker at the site of the crash.

“I was just trying to do the right thing and honor our fallen troops,” Ellinger said. “And I was recently told that the market absolutely cannot go on the private property.”

Ellinger said he would work with city officials to find a suitable location for the marker.

“I’m not going to quit,” said Ellinger. “I’m not a quitter.”
