ODESSA- After the bond passed at Ector County School District, the next step was to gather ideas on how to build the new elementary schools.

David Finley, the executive director of district operations, created an online survey with 13 award winning design options to incorporate into the new schools.

“We always knew it was important to gather information, but the difference was how to gather it and what was needed,” said Finley.

So far, the most popular design among participants is safety.

“The safety design begins when a child steps onto a school bus as well as the design of the wings,” said Finley. “Even how compact the school building is based on design.”

Finley said some of the best opinions about school safety and design is from teachers.

Teachers at one of the oldest schools in ECISD, Travis Elementary, were excited to participate in the survey.

Kelly Stanley, the campus curriculum facilitator at Travis Elementary, said it was so nice to be recognized and to have a voice in the decision.

Stanley as well other teachers at the school said they believe safety is the number one priority for designing a new elementary school.

The survey is open until December 21 to the public.
