ECISD Principal Survey on PTA 11/29/12

Odessa, TX - In a recent survey, the Ector County School District asked principals three simple questions: How does their Parent Teacher Association operate? How should they operate? What is the principal’s role in developing a PTA on campus?
Many principals in secondary schools say they do not have an active PTA
“A lack of PTA is a concern because of the parent involvement that you want into the school,” said Hood Junior High School Principal Wayne Squires. He says many parents are very active in booster clubs like band or sports and he says some parents might feel discouraged from joining the PTA as their child gets older.
“A lot of parents may feel like they are not needed on the campuses, which is absolutely not true,” Squires said.
Vecy McKibben, a mother of three is in the PTA at her youngest child's school and she's involved with booster clubs for her older children.
“Just getting to know the teachers and getting to know the school,” she said, “I think its also important to give opinion through the PTA on what school needs to do to help our kids.”
In the survey many principals say the role of the PTA should have little to do with raising money and more to do with helping teachers and parents form a partnership.
Principal Squires says the PTA focuses on the entire well being of the school and he is working to establish a PTA in his school.
“Right now we are using our parent link which is a communication piece that goes directly to the parents so that we can invite them on campus,” he said.
District officials say these are the first steps to gain information about the PTA and other forms of parental involvement so the trustees can begin working on a parental involvement policy.
