If you’re ready to face the long lines and scout those Black Friday deals, make sure you’re also keeping a watch for thievery this holiday season.

Corporal Sherrie Carruth of the Odessa Police Department has easy tips to this shopping season as smooth and safe as possible:

1. Do not shop alone. Shop with 2-3 people.
2. Shop during the daytime.
3. Lock your vehicles.
4. Park in well lighted areas
5. Pay attention to your surroundings.

Carruth said if women have too much to carry, do not bring your purse and instead, carry minimum amount of cash and the necessary identification and credit cards needed.

But if leaving your purse isn’t an option, Officer Loren Frost of the Midland Police Department has some suggestions.

“If you’re walking up to your car, hold your purse close to the car door, keys should be out, look both ways and if everything looks okay, enter your car safely,” said Frost.

Frost also recommends women carry their purse of their weaker arm, so if needed, they can fight with their stronger arm.

Both police departments will step up their patrol by monitoring local malls and big stores.

“What we want to do is show the community we are out there warding off someone who wants to ruin your holiday,” said Frost.
