ODESSA- A handgun is found inside a backpack of a Goliad Elementary student, and questions are still being asked about how the nine-year-old boy obtained the gun.
Reports indicate the incident began when the student shot a gun off campus around a few students.
Goliad Elementary Principal, Annette Macias, said the students involved quickly told school staff the boy brought the gun to school in his backpack.
“I really want to commend the students for doing the right thing and letting adults know what was going on and reporting it immediately,” Macias said.
School officials immediately secured the weapon and notified police, staff and parents of Goliad.
Many parents of school students said they were shocked this could happen at an elementary school.
Since the child is so young, no criminal charges can be filed, but ECISD will discipline the student according to the Student Code Conduct.
Police are currently investigating the off campus incident and how the nine-year-old boy obtain the gun.
