ODESSA-A vacant and hazardous home is gone in one neighborhood thanks to a city program.

The City of Odessa gave Snyder Street a fresh start by demolishing an old home through the Dangerous Building Program.

The program decides whether a building, commercial or residential, is deemed unsafe.

Once the decision is made, the building is boarded up, demolished or in some cases rehabilitated.

Code Enforcement Officer Darlene Days said during a demolition people line the streets in excitement for a safer and cleaner community.

“People take pride in their community and they also want to make sure that anything that might be a hazard to them is removed,” Days said.

Last year, the program removed approximately 20 to 25 unsafe buildings with the funding from the Commercial Development Block Grant Fund.

This year the city plans to remove 15 unsafe structures.
