ODESSA, TX – Keeping trick or treating safe and knowing where your child is this Halloween can all happen right in the palm of your hand via new technology.
Tonight trick or treaters line the streets for a good time. But for many parents, they worry about safety, especially once it gets dark.
“Trick or treating… I like it, only if it's safe. There's no excuse to not being safe and just watching out for your kids," said father Chris Mendez.
" I think it's still the same, I think it's alright. Me and my family, we go as a whole group," said mother Melody Hernandez.
The couple preps for a safe Halloween night, but a new app could make it easier. "Secura Fone" allows parents to check where their kids are , helping to keep them safe.
"I think that's a good idea actually. I would use it. As long as the parent knows that the kids are safe, I don't see any harm in it. I like it," stated Hernandez.
The app even allows children to make emergency calls, texts and e-mail alerts to their parents with a quick swipe. It also has a GPS, which pin points where the child is at all times. But law enforcement officials say this shouldn’t replace the real safe guard of parental supervision.
"Adult supervision is still the best. Go in groups with older kids if its younger kids and stay in neighborhoods that they know," said Corporal Ron Wright with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office.
This app is making it easier for parents to check on their little goons and goblins on Halloween day and it's completely free.
Some safety tips before you hit the streets to trick in treat include: wearing lighter colors, reflectors and have an adult check candy before a child eats it.
