VOTE 2012 - Voting Monitor Group: We'll Adhere to Texas Laws 10/26/12

Associated Press
October 26, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The head of an international group of voting observers threatened with arrest in Texas says the tension is a misunderstanding and that the state's Election Day laws will be followed.

Daan Everts, an ambassador with the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, told The Associated Press on Friday that his monitors won't go within 100 feet of polling sites as instructed.

Everts is the head of OSCE's long-term election observer mission. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott wrote him this week saying he was unclear about the OSCE's intentions. He also raised concerns about the group's meetings with opponents of voter ID initiatives.

Abbott warned Everts that observers could be arrested if they entered polling locations.

Everts says his group is nonpartisan. He says Abbott "should be better informed."
