ODESSA- For Margaret Burton, the executive director of Meal On Wheels in Odessa, finding volunteers to deliver meals is tough.
“High gas prices, holiday travel and even sickness during this time of year are some of the reasons why we have a shortage,” Burton said.
But there are dedicated volunteers who are retired and even full-time employees willing to not just deliver meals, but also deliver friendships.
Larry Pepper, owner of Larry Pepper Air Conditioning and Heating, said it doesn’t take long to help seniors who are homebound and in need of their daily nutrition.
“Depending on the route, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour,” Pepper said. “And I enjoy doing it and visiting with people when I drop off the meals and say ‘hi’ to them.”
Burton said she needs at least 30 volunteers to deliver meals.
