Memorial services are scheduled for Sam Williams, who put Texas-Pan American on the college sports map in 14 seasons as its men's basketball coach.
A university statement Tuesday says Williams died Monday of natural causes at the age of 88. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at Kreidler Funeral Home in Edinburg.
Williams headed the men's basketball program from 1958, when the school was still Pan American College, to 1973, when it was Pan American University. In 1963, he led the team from the little Edinburg school to consecutive NAIA finals in 1963 and '64, winning the '63 title. He also took the team to NCAA Division I in 1968.
Ten of the players on Williams' squads were drafted by NBA teams, with four playing as regulars.
