Midland, TX - Bella and her parents are making cookies. The simple task is a cherished moment for the Lee household.
Bella’s dad Travis ususally calls this rig his home.
“I work 12 days on and three days off,” he said, “24 hours on call.”
Bella's family is one of the hundreds of families who have to put their relationships on the back burner, while parents deal with a demanding job in the oilfield.
“I got two phones sitting there and you never know when one is going to go off,” Travis said, “When it does its the worst sound in the world.”
“She'll ask me when daddy is coming home and I don’t know what to say,” Ashley Lee said, “We have to call him and see.”
“I figure this would be just a 9 to 5 job,” Travis said, “Put in some hard labor and come home at the end of the day.”
Local divorce lawyers in Midland and Odessa say the stress on the relationships are too much for couples, which is why they have been so busy.
Patrick Ramsey with Samaritan Counseling Center says many couples are also going for help.
“The extended hours away from each other is what puts stress on these couples,” he said. “But research shows that marriages that stay together are based on being friends or also known as intimacy.”
With a baby brother or sister on the way, the Lee family says finding a good balance of work and play is a good recipe for healthy relationships
“We are trying to do as much as we can,” Travis said.
