Judge Denies Defense Motion in Gulf Cartel Case 9/28/12
September 28, 2012
Brownsville - A federal judge has denied motions to dismiss two counts against an alleged manager in Mexico's Gulf drug cartel.
The attorney for Juan Roberto Rincon-Rincon told U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle on Friday that the government failed to present evidence that his client had possessed, distributed or imported marijuana and cocaine into the United States.
Rincon-Rincon's own incriminating statements to investigators after his capture last October could prove to be the government's most direct link.
Prosecutors wrapped up the testimony of their final witness Friday morning.
Tagle indicated she expected the defense to rest after a short recess. The defense has not called any witnesses.
Rincon-Rincon is accused of supervising the shipment of tons of drugs from Mexico into Texas.
