MIDLAND, TX – The commercial space travel company XCOR Aerospace soon moving to the tall city is already hiring staff for their "out of this world" operation. The hangar is quiet today but in less than a year will be home to a state of the art rocket science facility.
"Just like any other project, you approve it and 6 months later you see the apartment complex, you have to get all the ground work laid and then the visual take place," said Michael Trost, Board Member, Midland Development Corporation.
XCOR’s Chief Operation Officer tells cbs-7 that they are on schedule with their re-location. Renovations to the facility will begin in the next few months and Midland International Airport has applied for a spaceport designation to allow XCOR's spacecrafts to take off and land at the airport. XCOR has also began hiring new employees and they hope to hire west Texans.
"It's good paying jobs, good positions more careers than they are jobs," said Trost.
"We wanna make sure that we're hiring from the community if we can, most of those employees will know the area and they can be ambassadors for us coming in from California," said Andrew Nelson, Chief Operation Officer, XCOR Aerospace.
XCOR tells us they also plan on using local vendors for supplies and services. All in an effort to keep money in west Texas.
"If you have local suppliers, you build great relationships and we become better integrated into the community," said Nelson.
XCOR is expected to begin their operation by Fall of 2013.
XCOR Aerospace currently has 5 job openings. Some are entry level and others require experience. XCOR representatives tell us pay varies from $50,000 per year to $100,000.
Depending on the applicants experience some positions may pay more. If hired, the employee will be trained at the company's current facility in California’s Mojave Desert.
