Texas Playing 'Wild Bunch' Special Teams
AUSTIN, Texas (AP)
While most teams would love to have kickoffs that sail into the end zone for touchbacks every time, the Texas Longhorns are daring opponents to bring it out.
The kickoff coverage team is allowing just 12.6 yards per return through the first two games. The Longhorns have nicknamed the unit the "Wild Bunch" for their crushing tackles.
And of freshman kicker Nick Rose's eight kickoffs that did not reach the end zone, the opponent's average starting field position has been the 14, leading coach Mack Brown to wonder if a touchback is overrated.
Brown calls this season's kickoff coverage the best he's had in 15 years.
Texas (2-0) plays at Mississippi (2-0) on Saturday night.
