Coach Under Fire After After Unusual Punishment 09/04/12
Any successful sports program requires discipline....but how far is too far?
Some Monahans parents are outraged after a coach subjected her players to an unusual punishment.
Parents say the coach made her players run barefoot on a hot tennis court after losing a game, now they say something has to be done.
Superintendent Keith Richardson says it was a hot day when the incident happened.
He confirms Coach Candice Swarb made her varsity team take of their shoes and socks and run laps on the hot tennis court.
A volleyball mom who prefers to stay anonymous, says the blisters on their feet were indescribable.
Although she was surprised to hear about it, she says the coach has a reputation for being tough, but she also cares about the well being of the girls.
The superintendent gave a statement saying:
"The volleyball incident last friday by our volleyball coach at the seminole tournament was a lapse in judgment.
She is an excellent coach, has had no other incidents on her record, and would never do anything to intentionally hurt one of her players. she has apologized to the volleyball players and their parents. our coach will receive a discipline reprimand.”
He says the district gave the coach a written warning.
The Lady Lobos varsity volleyball team is known to dominate... last year they made it to the regional semifinals in the postseason, the Superintendent says he spoke with all of the volleyball parents involved and they are ready to move on. The girls are still very found of the coach and were back in practice (Wednesday) eventing.
The Police Department says no charges have been filed.
Also, the school reports none of the girls quitting because of this incident.
