EL PASO, Texas (AP) - The number of border crossers in El Paso has declined in the first six months of this year compared with the same period of 2011.
According to city data, almost all of the Far West Texas city's bridges have seen fewer crossers, with the Stanton Bridge having the greatest reduction with a 12.6 percent decline in pedestrians and a 3 percent drop in passenger cars.
The Paso del Norte Bridge that connects both cities' downtown areas registered a 7.5 percent reduction in traffic. The Zaragoza Bridge had a 4.4 percent increase in traffic.
The El Paso Times reports that experts attribute the decline to the sluggish economy, wait times of up to two hours and the persisting violence in Ciudad Juarez across the border.
