Hobbs Inmate Hospitalized After In-Prison Attack 7/6/12
July 6, 2012
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico inmate is being treated at a Texas hospital after he apparently was assaulted by two other prisoners.
State Corrections Department officials say 20-year-old Jose Rivera was found unresponsive in his cell early Friday.
Authorities say Rivera is serving time at the Lea County Correctional Facility for first-degree murder and second-degree murder.
They say a preliminary investigation shows Rivera was lured into a cell and assaulted by two inmates.
Investigators are looking at retaliation as a possible motive since one of the attackers reportedly was a friend of Rivera's murder victim.
Corrections officials and Hobbs police are investigating the attack. The names of the two alleged attackers are being withheld.
They say Rivera remains hospitalized in Lubbock, but details of his condition and injuries are not immediately available.
