Odessa, Texas - With the cold weather setting in and many people looking for ways to heat their home, the danger of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is greatly increased.
Fire officials recommend that you install a UL listed Carbon monoxide Detector. The UL rating means the device has been tested and meets strict requirements for fire and shock safety.
The detectors come in several brands and are fairly inexpensive.
Some detectors run off battery others require an electrical outlet.
It is always best to put one near any appliance that runs on gas.
If the area in your home where your gas appliance sits is not properly ventilated the alarm will sound before you or your family fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning include severe headaches, nausea and confusion.
Low levels of carbon monoxide will cause these symptoms over a period of time but high concentrations can quickly cause death.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that is emitted from any gas-fueled appliance such as water heaters, stoves, clothes dryers and furnaces.
If you have recently had roof work done to your home and your furnace is housed in the attic, It is also highly recommended that you make sure your exhaust vents on your roof have been reconnected properly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
