WACO, Texas (AP) - Remains of some of the two dozen Columbian mammoths discovered more than 30 years ago in the Waco area will be getting a broader public look. The grand opening of the Waco Mammoth Site is Dec. 5.
Experts believe the mammoths died in a mudslide some 68,000 years ago. The site is in thick woods along the Brazos and Bosque rivers, where the first bone was found in 1978.
Legislation is pending in Congress to make the site part of the
National Park Service.
Waco and Baylor University's Mayborn Museum last year kicked off the first phase of a project, with a climate-controlled pavilion to protect the bones, a small visitors center and roads.
