Odessa Animal Control Raids Puppy Mill 11/18/09

Odessa Police Department
News Release
November 18, 2009

On November 17, 2009, at approximately 1230 p.m., the Odessa Police Animal Control received a report of animals without food and water at 12251 Drivers Hall of Fame. Upon arrival Animal Control Officers observed camper trailers and kennels housing dogs. The dogs were in various stages of neglect and did not have access to food and water. Officers could hear dogs that appeared to be confined in large numbers inside the camper trailers. Dogs were also stressed and fighting with each other.

Animal Control Officers requested a seizure warrant for all animals on the property from Justice of the Peace Eddie Spivey. Per Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 821, Judge Spivey ordered Animal Control Officers to seize all animals confined to the camper trailers and on the property of 12251 Drivers Hall of Fame.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Ector County Sheriffs Officers and Odessa Police Animal Control arrived at Drivers Hall of Fame to execute the warrant. Animal Control Officers discovered 73 animals living in deplorable conditions and trapped in crowded conditions inside the camper trailers. It appears the owners were using the camper trailers for a puppy mill. Most of the 73 dogs were Chihuahua breeds. An old blind pig was also discovered in a junk pile near the camper trailers. Two dogs were dead on the scene.

There will be a court hearing for Animal Control to take custody of all the animals on November 24, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. at the Ector County Court House. The property owners have not contacted Animal Control at this time.
