Texas Children Targeted By Mexican Drug Cartels 11/18/09

Marfa, TX - "We're not talking about an actual cartel member walking into the
school; they're recruiting students that go into the school and now
that school student is now in the cartel."
US border patrol says dangerous Mexican cartels are reaching into West
Texas schools trying gather a workforce.
"They entice them with money they have charisma."
They target students as young as middle school age.
And if these kids slip up, or loose the contraband.
"They will kill them."
A dark side the cartel doesn't mention.
"We have video of that happening on the Mexican side and now that its
expanding into the US side we want to protect our youth from that."
Border Patrol out of Marfa along with several other agencies are doing
their part to protect kids by going into West Texas schools with a
program called Operation Detour.
"Its a hard hitting presentation that explains what the attraction is
to be drawn into that business but also very clearly explains the
risks and dangers that they can expose themselves to."
And border cities are not the only ones at risk.
"The contraband that's being moved is in high demand throughout the US
so anywhere in Texas is really close enough to the border to where
they can be affected."
Border Patrol plans to show this video presentation throughout west
Texas, in the coming year hoping to prevent the worst from happening.
