College Station, Texas - As the 10th anniversary of the deadly bonfire collapse approaches this week, the former president of Texas A&M says only her successor should decide whether the tradition returns to campus, a newspaper reports.
The Bryan-College Station Eagle reports Sunday that 50-year-old Elsa Murano says only the university president, without interference from others, should make the decision.
Murano had been in the midst of reaching a decision but she resigned in June after receiving a poor performance review.
Twelve Aggies were killed and 27 hurt on Nov. 18, 1999. That's when a 59-foot-high wedding cake-like stack of more than 5,000 logs collapsed as students were building it.
Texas A&M reached a $2.1 million settlement with several plaintiffs in October 2008.
