Howard County Volunteer Firefighters Save House From Grassfire 11/5/09

Quick work by Howard County Volunteer Firefighters and a little good timing helped save a house from a grassfire.

The fire broke out around 12:30 about 8 1/2 miles south of Big Spring.

Smoke could be seen as far away as the city.

It only burned 4 acres but nearly burned down a house.

Volunteer firefighters worked quickly to save the property and by chance the department was out at an emergency drill near the area when it broke out.

Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan said burning trash may have sparked the fire and adds an ounce of prevention by the homeowner helped save their property.

"The residents at this cut down and scalped their grasses where they're real low you see the fire came up on them hard. But with the low-cut grass, the fire slowed down which enabled us to help put the fire out and protect their house."

Sullivan adds that he will ask County Commissioners at their second November meeting on November 23 to re-enact the burn ban.

He said that if grass fires start popping up he may ask County Judge Mark Barr to enact an emergency 45-day burn ban.
