Senator Cornyn Calls Congress to Postpone H1N1 Vaccines to Detainees 11/5/09

Experts say, the flu bug is outrunning the vaccine. And health officials told congress yesterday they don't expect to have enough pandemic-flu vaccine, to meet the needs of high priority population groups, until will into December and possibly not until January.

Those high-risk groups include pregnant women, health care workers, parents caring for newborns, people ages 6 months through 24 years old, and chronically ill people ages 25 through 64.

Today, US Senator John Cornyn from Texas, along with Kay Baily Hutchison, called to postpone vaccinations for the H1N1 virus to detainees at Guantanamo Bay until Americans identified as being a priority for vaccination have the opportunity to receive it first.

Sen. Cornyn says, "Even if they produce them later on, it will literally be too late for pregnant women and children, and others who need that vaccine, in order to avoid the H1N1 virus."

Last week, Senator Cornyn sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, expressing serious concern about the delays and shortages in distributing the H1N1 vaccine.

Texas was expected to receive 3.4 million doses in October. But as of last week, the state had not even received one million doses.
