(Las Cruces, N.M.)- A New Mexico Oil Services company will pay more than $40-thousand dollars to settle a racial harassment lawsuit brought on by the E.E.O.C.
The case involved an African American employee and racially offensive slurs.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charged Graco Fishing and Rental Tools, Inc. violated federal law.
The E.E.O.C. says the company subjected Kalond Stoker to a racially hostile work place.
Stoker was employed in the company's former Hobbs, New Mexico location and claimed the supervisor used racial slurs against him.
E.E.O.C. Attorney Robert Canino says that despite complaints by Stoker, the company didn't investigate his allegations.
According to the E.E.O.C., the company's supervisor reportedly said “that it's the oilfield and they talk about everything and joke and make fun of people”.
Under the settlement, the company will train employees on the law against racial harassment and make other corrective measures.
