Odessa, Texas - Steven Ray Hernandez, a 7th grade history teacher at Bowie, was arrested back in June for exposing his genitals to a woman inside a store.
Hernandez passed a background check and was hired by ECISD in August.
The question? How he passed the check despite being arrested?
Hernandez was arrested October 21st on charges of tampering with a witness.
Yesterday, the district placed him on paid leave as the matter is investigated.
We asked the ECISD spokesperson whether a thorough background check was conducted with Hernandez.
ECISD Public Information Officer Mike Adkins says, "Every person who's recommended for a position here at ECISD has to be finger printed, has to have a criminal background check.”
The district's application requires you to admit to any prior convictions or arrests.
It's unclear whether Hernandez admitted to his arrest, but the district says they would not knowingly hire someone arrested for indecent exposure.
