STANTON - The Martin County Sheriff's Office is investigation a slew of forgeries.
The good news is they have already resolved most of those cases; however, there is still one big case let to solve.
Martin County is quiet most days but a wave of crimes are taking place.
"Three local farmers have had hay stolen."
Sheriff John Woodward says the crimes have involved a different type of theft.... theft by check.
"Checks have been written out of a closed account. So the individual that wrote the checks was well aware that it wasn't just a matter of insufficient funds, it was an actual closed account," he said.
None of the victims would talk on camera but Woodward told me what happenened.
"When he showed up, [he] was actually very friendly. He had a country air about him. I think thought to be an honest guy and they ended up loading the hay. He wrote the check."
But when the checks bounced, the honest guy bilked a lot of money from his victims.
"The combined amount's about $3,000 now on both victims," Woodward said.
"A lot of these farmers were counting on this money to make land payments and different things so it's a tough blow to get whenever a crook comes in and cheats them out of their money."
He does offer some important advice.
"Don't take checks without confirming who you are dealing with. Get all the information you can driver's license, good phone numbers, addresses. It's not that you are not trusting, it's just that you are being cautious and using some wisdom."
Woodward says they are looking for a person of interest named Dylan Thomas Forbes. He is 25-30 years old and may be driving a white duolly pickup with a pull banner. If you have information you are urged to contact the Martin County Sheriff's Office at 432-756-3336.
Woodward said Forbes is NOT a suspect but is a person he wants to talk to.
