Odessa, Texas – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin is piloting the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) curriculum in two of its freshman seminar sections this fall. This innovative approach to helping new college students adjust to the heavier workload at a university will garner UTPB a “Recognition of Excellence” and a spot on Thursday’s (Oct. 29) agenda of the quarterly meeting of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) in Austin.
President David Watts, Provost Bill Fannin, the two faculty teaching AVID – Lanita Akins and Kay Kolb, and senior UTPB student Jonathan Brown, who has become a national spokesman about the benefits of this program, will be making a presentation for the board. A small grant from the THECB has allowed this pilot program, and the benefits to students will be summarized through actual testimonials. The team from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin will be joined by AVID Executive Director Jim Nelson and AVID Texas State Director Eileen Friou.
“We are delighted to be at the forefront of this movement to heighten student success in Texas,” commented Dr. Watts. “UTPB is committed to providing quality instruction and whatever academic assistance is necessary for our students to complete their degrees.”
