Fort Stockton, Texas - The hospital in Fort Stockton is looking to collect debts, large and small, that have been ignored by patients over the years.
"We have people that owe a couple of dollars to patients that owe 40 to 50 thousand dollars, so we're offering it to everybody," says Hospital CEO Russell Tippin.
They're hoping to draw in more cash by offering a discount on bills, no matter how large or long overdue.
"We're going to offer everybody a one-time discount if they'll come in and pay it, up to 50 percent off."
It may be a one-time offer, but it's not the first time they've offered something similar.
"We've offered one of these before, about five years ago. Had some pretty good success, and now, we feel like we need to do it again."
But for the bills that still aren't paid after the discount phase, they may have to be pushed a little harder.
"We're trying to avoid litigation, and settle everything up front, and at the same time offer a discount, because we know in this economic time that money's tight, but it's tight all over."
Fort Stockton's hospital is one of the few in the state that is owned it's County, and because of that, they have the County Attorney at their disposal.
"A debt to the hospital is a debt to the County, so the County Attorney's office has a little more leverage than we do to attempt to collect that debt owed to the County."
Pecos county hospital officials say this new plan will go into affect sometime this week.
From there, you will only have 30 days to take advantage of this one-time discount opportunity.
